Oki-san avait une personnalité amicale.  Une fois, il m'a même demandé "comment vas-tu, patron?"  Il envoyait souvent des courriels.  Mais ce n'est pas quelqu'un dont il est facile de parler.  Après tout, il était Itaru Oki, le trompettiste légendaire.

 Lorsque M. Oki a déménagé à Paris en 1974, le journal Asahi Shimbun a écrit "c'est une fuite des cerveaux".  Dans le monde du jazz japonais, à la fin des années 1960, il y avait de vrais samouraïs qui se sont aventurés dans des territoires inconnus: Masayuki Takayanagi, Masahiko Togashi, Masahiko Satoh, Motoharu Yoshizawa, Mototeru Takagi, Yoshisaburo Toyozumi et Itaru Oki.  Ils ont créé leur propre nouveau JAZZ.  Il se peut que ce ne soit que maintenant que nous pouvons comprendre que leur musique était à ce point unique et originale, impossible à trouver ailleurs dans le monde.  Beaucoup d'entre eux sont déjà entrés dans le royaume des défunts.  Cependant, Itaru Oki est resté actif sur les lignes de front, comme Masahiko Satoh et Yoshisaburo Toyozumi.  Sa musique avait un caractère unique.  C'était avant-gardiste, mais il avait la chaleur d'une touche humaine.  C'est sa personnalité même. 

Le 2 janvier 1996, j'ai organisé un duo avec Oki-san et Nobuyoshi Ino au Café Amores, que je dirigeais à l'époque dans la ville de Hōfu.  J'ai contacté le trompettiste coréen Choi Sun Bae, qui admirait beaucoup Oki-san, pour voir s'il aimerait aussi jouer avec lui.  Sa réponse fut un "OK!" immédiat.  M. Choi est venu au Japon avec sa femme pour un seul spectacle.  Ino-san était un vieil ami de Choi, mais c'était la première fois que Choi-san rencontrait Oki-san.  Néanmoins, en entendant l'échange de sons ce soir-là, je ne pouvais pas croire qu'ils jouaient ensemble pour la première fois.  Un enregistrement, intitulé Kami Fusen, est maintenant disponible sur CD et LP sur NoBusiness Records.

 Il y a deux ans, j'ai de nouveau invité Oki-san à Hōfu pour une performance live.  Il était absent du Japon depuis longtemps.  C'était la première fois que je pouvais entendre sa trompette de forme unique en direct.  Après le spectacle, nous avons parlé du bon vieux temps.

 Nous avions échangé des courriels jusqu'à très récemment, mais Oki-san est décédé subitement.  Il profite déjà des séances avec ses camarades dans l'autre monde.

Oki-san had a friendly personality. Once, he even asked me "how are you doing, boss?" He often sent emails. But he is not someone it is easy to talk about. After all, he was Itaru Oki, the legendary trumpet player.

When Mr Oki moved to Paris in 1974, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper wrote "this is a brain drain." In the Japanese jazz world, at the end of the 1960s, there were some true samurai who ventured into unknown territories: Masayuki Takayanagi, Masahiko Togashi, Masahiko Satoh, Motoharu Yoshizawa, Mototeru Takagi, Yoshisaburo Toyozumi, and Itaru Oki. They created a New JAZZ of their own. It may be that it is only now that we can understand that their music was so unique and original, impossible to find anywhere else in the world. Many of them have already entered the realm of the departed. However, Itaru Oki remained active at the frontlines, like Masahiko Satoh and Yoshisaburo Toyozumi. His music had a unique character. It was avant-garde, yet it had the warmth of human touch. This is his very personality.

On January 2, 1996, I organized a duo with Oki-san and Nobuyoshi Ino at Café Amores, which I was running at the time in the city of Hōfu. I contacted Korean trumpeter Choi Sun Bae, who admired Oki-san very much, to see if he would like to perform with him too. His response was an immediate "OK!" Mr Choi came to Japan with his wife for a single show. Ino-san was an old friend of Choi's, but it was the first time Choi-san had met Oki-san. Nonetheless, hearing the exchange of sounds on that night, I couldn't believe they were playing together for the first time. A recording, titled Kami Fusen, is now available on CD and LP on NoBusiness Records.

Two years ago, I invited Oki-san to Hōfu again for a live performance. He had been absent from Japan for a long time. It was the first time I was able to hear his uniquely shaped trumpet live. After the show, we talked about the old days, when I participated in the recording of the Bee Gees.

We had been exchanging emails until very recently, but Oki-san suddenly passed away. He's already enjoying the sessions with his comrades in the other world.

沖至さんは、気さくな人柄だった。私にも、「社長、元気？」と、メールをよく送って下さっていた。

でも、本当なら、そんなに気楽に接していい人ではないのだ。何しろ、あの生きる伝説のトランペット奏者、Itaru Okiなのだから。

1974年、沖さんがパリに移住をされるとき、朝日新聞は「これは、頭脳の流出である。」と書いた。

1960年代末の日本のジャズ界には、高柳昌行、富樫雅彦、佐藤允彦、吉沢元治、高木元輝、豊住芳三郎、そして沖至という未知の領域に足を踏み入れた正にサムライがいた。

彼等は、アメリカの模倣に終わらない新しい自分たちのJAZZを創造した。今だからこそ、彼等の音楽が世界のどこにもない独自なものだった事が理解できるのかもしれない。

彼等の多くはすでに鬼籍に入っている。だが、沖至は佐藤允彦と豊住芳三郎と共に、現役で、最前線で活躍をしていた。

彼の音楽は、唯一無二の個性を持つ。前衛でありながらも、どこか人肌の暖かさを持っていた。これは、まさに彼の性格そのものだ。

私は、１９９６年１月２日、当時経営していたcafé Amoresで、沖さんと井野信義さんとのデュオを企画した。私は、沖さんを私淑する韓国のトランペッター、崔善培さんに、共演をしたいかどうか連絡をしてみたら、即答で「OK!」だった。崔さんは、たった１回のライヴの為に奥さんと来日された。

井野さんは、崔さんとは旧知の仲だったが、沖さんとは初めて会うのだった。だが、演奏は初めての共演とは思えない音の交流が聴けた。

現在、この時の録音は、No Business Recordsから「紙ふうせん」と題したCDとLPでリリースされている。

2年前には、久しぶりに沖さんを防府市にお呼びしてライヴを行った。ユニークな形をしたトランペットを始めて生で聴くことが出来た。打ち上げでは、ビージーズのレコーディングに参加した昔話等に話の花が咲いたものだ。

つい最近までメールのやり取りをしていた

ウソのように、突然あの世に旅立たれてしまった。あちらの世界では、級友たちと、もうセッションを楽しんでおられる事でしょう。
