Les parents d'Oki étaient des musiciens traditionnels (des professionnels, je crois!). Il a commencé avec le Dixieland jazz, dans une fanfare quand il était étudiant, je pense. Il a appris avec Fumio Nanri, le premier grand trompettiste du Dixieland du Japon. Je l'ai vu quand j'étais lycéen. Je m'intéressais aussi au Dixieland grâce à l'influence d'un ami. J'ai aussi appris de "Sing, Sing, Sing" de Gene Krupa, en 78.

J'ai joué avec Oki pour la première fois en 1965, quand il a déménagé à Tokyo depuis sa ville natale d'Osaka. Je jouais au club du Shinagawa Prince Hotel. J'y ai joué avec Milt Jackson, qui a joué un blues au piano. Les musiciens du Modern Jazz Quartet séjournaient dans cet hôtel et ils visitaient souvent le club, après avoir joué dans des salles de concert (à l'exception de John Lewis). J'ai joué avec Oki il y a deux ans à Suimintei, à Sagamihara. Grands moments! Mais sa prochaine tournée au Japon, en 2019, a été annulée à la dernière minute car il était malade. J'ai rencontré son ex-femme Kikuchi le mois dernier à Yamanekoken (elle devait revenir de Paris à cause du coronavirus en mars).

Oki's parents were traditional music players (professionals, I believe!). He started with Dixieland jazz, in a brass band when he was student, I think. He learned from Fumio Nanri, Japan's first great Dixieland trumpeter. I saw him when I was a high school student. I was interested in Dixieland too through the influence of a friend. I also learned from "Sing, Sing, Sing" by Gene Krupa, on 78.

I played with Oki for the first time in 1965, when he moved to Tokyo from his hometown of Osaka. I was playing at the club of the Shinagawa Prince Hotel. I played there with Milt Jackson, who sat in for one blues on piano. The Modern Jazz Quartet musicians were staying at this hotel and they visited the club often, after playing in concert halls (except for John Lewis). I played with Oki two years ago at Suimintei, in Sagamihara. Great moments! But his next Japan tour, in 2019, was canceled at the last minute because he was ill. I met his ex-wife Kikuchi last month at Yamanekoken (she had to come back from Paris due to the coronavirus this March).
