En France, le décès de Simon H Fell n’a pas fait l’objet des hommages auxquels on aurait pu s’attendre. L’été probablement, le caractère hors norme de ses créations, sûrement aussi, n’ont pas contribué à ces élans du cœur dans l’hexagone, alors qu’il y résidait, à Saint Dizier Leyrenne (Creuse).

Mais peut-être que vous ne le connaissiez pas, ou pas assez. C’est un peu mon cas. 

J’avais été alerté par Richard Comte, qui a joué et enregistré avec lui. J’avais chroniqué sur ce blog l’un de leur duo, « Panazol ». Puis, lorsque la nouvelle est tombée, j’ai pu lire des témoignages d’improvisateurs britanniques de premier plan, et j’ai commencé de mesurer l’immensité du travail accompli pas ce bonhomme souriant. Improvisateur virtuose de la contrebasse, animateur de plusieurs groupes, compositeur exigeant mixant écriture et improvisation en balayant les frontières esthétiques dans ce qu’il appelait le « fourth stream », fondateur du label Bruce’s Fingers (plus d’une centaine de références). Il a, en particulier, joué et enregistré avec Derek Bailey, à plusieurs reprises. Il a permis l’éclosion de jeunes talents, les a accompagnés, leur a dégoté des contrats, s’est battu pour que chacun soit payé correctement. Il alliait bienveillance et rigueur. Il a fait se rencontrer des improvisateurs britanniques et français ... J’en oublie sûrement.

Plutôt que de rédiger une nécrologie compassée, j’ai demandé à des improvisateurs de témoigner, ou de me laisser relayer leurs témoignages. Ils se succéderont sur ce blog à partir de lundi prochain. Pour ma part, je rédigerai des chroniques d’albums anciens ou récents, de vidéos etc. 

Une page spéciale sera créée pour rassembler l’ensemble de ces articles, avec des mises à jour en fonction des publications.

In France, the death of Simon H Fell did not receive the tributes one might expect. Probably in the summer, the extraordinary character of his creations, surely also, was not reached by these outbursts of the heart in France, so he lived there, in Saint Dizier Leyrenne (Creuse).

But maybe you didn't know him, or not enough. It is a bit like me.

I had been alerted by Richard Comte, who performed and recorded with him. I wrote a review on this blog about one of their duo, "Panazol". Then, when the news broke, I read the testimonials of leading British improvisers, and began to appreciate the immensity of the work this smiling fellow has done. Double bass virtuoso improviser, animator of several groups, demanding composer mixing writing and improvisation while sweeping aesthetic boundaries in what he calls the "fourth stream", founder of the Bruce's Fingers label (plus a hundred references). He has, in particular, performed and recorded with Derek Bailey, on several occasions. He allowed the emergence of young talents, accompanied them, got them contracts, fought for everyone to be paid properly. He combined benevolence and rigor. He brought together British and French improvisers ... I am sure I forget.

Rather than writing a stiff obituary, I asked improvisers to testify, or let me relay their testimonies. They will follow one another on this blog from next Monday. For my part, I will write reviews of old or recent albums, videos etc.

A special page will be created to bring together all of these articles, with updates based on the publications.
