Je suis vidé de perdre un ami et collègue après tant d’années où l'on a joué et travaillé ensemble sur ses projets. Nous avons eu une excellente relation avec des plaisanteries qui fusaient de chaque côté. J’ai en fait d'incroyables, parfois dérangeantes (en particulier lors les premières compositions) mais toujours sincères, et éprouvant profondément de l'intérêt pour sa musique. Je lui dois beaucoup pour sa confiance en m’incluant dans son travail.

Simon était unique, sa foi dans les musiciens était incroyable, poussant souvent chacun aux limites de leur capacité avec sa vision originale de la composition entrelacée à l’improvisation libre.

Les répétitions avec lui vont me manquer; il disait toujours à l’ensemble au tout début  "Ne vous inquiétez pas de la difficulté de la musique écrite, c’est juste une partie du voyage ... ". Il compterait pour nous ... mais alors il criait "Non non non pas comme ça ! » ... Il me regardait souvent, me voyait sourire et il levait les yeux au plafond. Il nous faisait travailler dur, mais j’ai toujours aimé ça.

Son grand sens de l’humour, traîner avec lui et Jo (sa femme), tous ces rires mêlés de discours sérieux à propos de la vie et de la musique à parts égales, tout ça va me manquer.

Score is just part of the journey

I am gutted to lose a friend and colleague after so many years playing, and working on his projects together. We had a great relationship with banter going back and forth. I did some amazing, thought provoking, sometimes mind bendingly tricky (especially the early compositions)  always genuine, interesting and from the heart music with him. I owe a lot to him for his trust in including me in his work.

Simon was a one off, his faith in the musicians was amazing, often pushing everyone to the limits of their ability with his original vision of intertwining composition and free improvisation.

I will miss the rehearsals, he would always say to the ensemble at the very start " Do not worry about the written music being difficult, it's just part of the journey..." Then he would count us in...then shout "No no no not like that !" ...he would often glance over at me and see me smile and raise his eyes to the ceiling, he worked us hard but I always enjoyed it.
I'll miss his great sense of humour, hanging out with him and Jo, lots of laughter mixed with the serious talk of life and music in equal measures.
